Check Fraud Prevention Tips

Despite the increased digitalization of our world, including our finances, check fraud is emerging as a common fraud threat, increasingly impacting consumers and businesses. Mail theft is one of the primary drivers of this fraud type, with thieves finding checks in stolen mail and using the checks as well as the information they contain to commit fraud.
There are steps you can take to help prevent falling victim to check fraud.

1. Only use mailboxes that are secure to send mail containing checks. For example, drop off mail directly to the post office versus leaving it in a curbside mailbox that is unlocked.
2. Use digital payment methods such as debit cards, credit cards, ACH, bill pay, or other electronic transfers to pay bills, make purchases, or send money to friends and family.
3. When writing checks, use a black gel pen or pen specifically designed for check writing. These pens have ink that is resistant to check washing, lessening the likelihood of your check being altered if falls into the wrong hands.
